Mustangs Swim to Second at JV Conference

Young Mustangs Gain Valuable Experience

 

The Mounds View Mustangs participated in the Suburban East Conference (SEC) Junior Varsity (JV) meet on Saturday, February 18 in Stillwater.  The Mustangs’ squad of thirteen swimmers finished second in the top flight that consisted of the first through fourth place teams in the SEC dual meet standings. The Mustangs finished the SEC season in third place with a 6-2 record.   

 

The locals got off to a nice start with a second and seventh place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.  The quartet of sophomore Jaymes Andrews, freshman Ben Goldman, junior Derek Chen, and freshman Ryan Lawrence touched the wall in 1:58.43.  The second unit of seventh grader Matthew Shen, seventh grader Micah Vranyes, senior Alan Wang, and eighth grader James Freimuth clocked a 2:09.97.  Sophomore Nate Fatkhiyev swam to a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:05.38.  Lawrence clocked a 25.11 in the 50-yard freestyle to finish second.  Wang was fourth in 25.96, Andrews claimed sixth in 26.70, and eighth grader Leo Cui was thirteenth in 27.49.  In the 100-yard butterfly, Chen swam to fourth in 1:08.82, while Lawrence was sixth in 1:10.06.  Andrews had a nice swim of 59.18 to finish third in the 100-yard freestyle.  Goldman was eighth 1:07.12.      

 

Fatkhiyev clocked a 5:46.98 to claim sixth in the 500-yard freestyle.  In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Chen, Wang, Fatkhiyev, and Lawrence claimed second in 1:42.65.  The quartet of Goldman, seventh grader Andrew Apel, Freimuth, and Cui finished eighth in 1:58.11.  In the 100-yard breaststroke, the Mustangs took the fifth through eighth places.  Goldman (1:13.31), Chen (1:15.57), Wang (1:16.09), and Vranyes (1:20.32) got the job done for the locals.  To close out the meet, the Mustangs clocked a 4:14.05 to claim sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay behind Fatkhiyev, Cui, Apel, and Andrews. Other Mustangs competing in their final meet of the season were senior Cameron Anderson and freshman Adam Higley.  

 

The Mustangs’ varsity squad swings into action on Thursday, February 23 at the Section 4AA swimming preliminaries at Stillwater Junior High School in Stillwater, beginning at 5:30 pm. Diving takes place on Friday, February 24 at 6:10 pm, with both swimming and diving finals held on Saturday, February 25, beginning at 1:30 pm at the Stillwater JHS venue.
