Mustangs Finish Second at 4AA Sections
Quackenbush, 200 Free Relay Team Qualify for State Meet
The Mounds View Mustangs swam and dived to a second place finish at the Section 4AA championship meet finals on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25 at Stillwater Junior High. The Mustangs scored 395.5 points to claim the runner-up trophy for the second straight year.† Stillwater easily won the championship with a score of 580.5 points.† The Mustangs were led by freshman Will Quackenbush who finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and qualified for the State meet at the University of Minnesotaís Jean Freeman Aquatic Center on March 2-4.† ††The Mustangs 200-yard freestyle relay team finished second to earn a trip to the State meet, as well.† Several Mustangs posted seasonís best times in their respective events over the course of the three-day meet to cap off their season.
The Mustangs had a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with the quartet of freshman Isaac Pan, sophomore Will Goldman, junior co-captain Quinn Doan, and sophomore Ian Boyles touching the wall in a seasonís best time of 1:40.24.† This was just eight one-hundredths of a second off the State qualifying time of 1:40.16.† In the 200-yard freestyle, Quackenbush finished third in a seasonís best 1:46.72 which put him eighth on the Mustangs All-time Top 10 Honor Roll.† Senior co-captain Albert Pan was fifth in a seasonís best 1:50.95. Sophomore Jared Martini had a seasonís best time of 1:52.14 to finish eighth, while junior David Severson was fourteenth in a seasonís best 2:03.53. Isaac Pan claimed fourth place in the 200-yard individual medley with a seasonís best swim of 1:59.41 which moved him to sixth on the Mustangs All-time Top 10 Honor Roll. †Senior co-captain Noah Vranyes had a seasonís best 2:09.32 to finish ninth to win the consolation heat.† Junior Jason Louís seasonís best 2:10.72 was good enough for tenth, while eighth grader Sam Magnuson was fourteenth in 2:27.43.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Boyles had a fifth place finish with a seasonís best 22.85. Junior Kyle Peterson had a seasonís best 23.52 to claim tenth, while Goldmanís 23.81 was good enough for twelfth and just off his seasonís best time of 23.76 in preliminaries two days earlier. Junior Atakan Yurttas was right behind in thirteenth in a seasonís best 23.85. †In diving competition, sophomore Tad Tomczyk finished sixth on the one-meter board with a seasonís best 11 dive score of 284.15, while sophomore Josh Bowman was eighth with 278.70 points, also a seasonís best performance. †
In the 100-yard butterfly, Doan swam to a seasonís best 53.71 to claim fifth place and put him ninth on the Mustangs All-Time Top 10 Honor Roll. Sophomore Max Jytyla was tenth in a seasonís best 58.94, while Yurttas swam to a seasonís best 1:00 16 to claim twelfth. †In the 100-yard freestyle, Albert Pan swam to a seasonís best 50.70 to finish fifth.† Boyles had a swim of 51.00 to claim seventh, while Petersonís seasonís best 53.48 was good enough for thirteenth.†
Quackenbush had a nice 4:51.73 swim to finish third in the 500 Free and qualify for the State meet after posting a seasonís best 4:50.81 two days earlier in preliminaries. That Thursday swim put him fifth on Mustangs All-time Top 10 Honor Roll. †Vranyes finished eighth in 5:17.27 after posting a seasonís best 5:12.34 in preliminaries. Lou was tenth in 5:24.16, just off his seasonís best preliminary swim of 5:23.34 two days earlier.† Severson finished twelfth in a seasonís best 5:37.34.
The Mustangs were seeded second in the 200-yard freestyle relay and held that spot to qualify for the State meet with a seasonís best swim of 1:30.32 behind Doan, Goldman, Isaac Pan, and Quackenbush. In the 100-yard backstroke, Martini finished sixth in a seasonís best 1:00.20. ††Sophomore Coby Lessard had a seasonís best 1:00.94 to finish ninth, while junior Thomas Wilkowske (1:06.16) and Magnuson (1:07.57) were thirteenth and fifteenth, respectively.
Isaac Pan swam to a seasonís best 1:01.87 to claim fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke. That swim also put him tenth on the Mustangs All-time Top 10 Honor Roll.† Doan had a seasonís best 1:03.23 to finish sixth. Goldman won the consolation heat by finishing ninth with a seasonís best 1:04.77, while Jytylaís 1:08.81 was good enough for thirteenth, and just off his seasonís best Thursday preliminary swim of 1:07.68. In the final event of the afternoon, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Mustangs swam well, but couldnít make one of the top two spots to qualify for the State meet. The quartet of Boyles, Albert Pan, Martini, and Quackenbush touched the wall in 3:20.40 to finish third in a seasonís best time. Boyles lead-off leg of 50.95 was a seasonís best time in the 100 Free.††††
State meet swimming preliminaries will be held at 6:00 pm on Friday March 3 at the Freeman Aquatic Center and both swimming and diving finals will take place the next evening.
