Mustangs’ Season Ends at State Prelims
Season’s Best Times Not Quite Fast Enough to Advance
The Mounds View Mustangs swim team participated in the preliminary round of the Minnesota State High School League 2017 swim & dive championships at the University of Minnesota Jean Freeman Aquatic Center on Friday, March 3. Despite season’s best performance by the Mustangs’ two entries, they did not finish in the “Top 16” to qualify for the finals on Saturday, March 4. Freshman Will Quackenbush had a strong swim to claim twentieth place in the 500-yard freestyle with a season’s best time of 4:50.19. He currently holds down fifth place on the all-time Mustangs honor roll in that event. He also swam the anchor leg on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that claimed eighteenth place with a season’s best swim of 1:29.87. The other members of that quartet were junior co-captain Quinn Doan, freshman Isaac Pan, and sophomore Ian Boyles. Despite not advancing to finals, the Mustangs State meet participants, who are all underclassmen, gained valuable experience in championship competition that will undoubtedly pay off next season.
