Mustangs Finish 6-2 in Suburban East Conference

The Mounds View Mustangs swim & dive team hosted Woodbury at Chippewa Middle School on Thursday, February 9 in their final dual meet of the season.  The Mustangs won 6 of 12 events on the program, but showed the depth necessary to outduel the visiting Royals on the way to a 100-85 victory. The locals were led by junior co-captain Quinn Doan who won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke.  Freshman Isaac Pan also recorded a pair of wins in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke.  Freshman Will Quackenbush picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle.  The Mustangs 200-yard medley relay team was also victorious.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 12-2 lead with a 1-2 finish in the 200 Medley Relay.  The quartet of Isaac Pan, sophomore Will Goldman, sophomore Max Jytyla and junior Atakan Yurttas clocked at 1:49.59 to claim first.  The second unit of sophomore Coby Lessard, junior Jason Lou, Doan, and senior co-captain Noah Vranyes was right behind in 1:49.66.  Quackenbush had a strong swim of 1:49.68 to win the 200 Free in a very tight race. Sophomore Jared Martini was fifth in a season’s best 1:54.60.  The Mustangs swept the 200 IM with Isaac Pan cruising to a win by over 10 seconds with a 2:04.88 clocking.  Lou was second in 2:15.59 and Vranyes was third in 2:16.70. In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Ian Boyles touched the wall in 23.23 to finish third.  Goldman was fourth in 24.35, while junior Thomas Wilkowske was fifth in 24.95.  At the diving break, the Mustangs had the lead at 38-24.

Sophomore Josh Bowman was the only Mustangs diver at the meet and tallied 174.70 points to finish second in one-meter diving.  The Royals finished 1-3-4 to narrow the score to 42-35 in favor of the Mustangs. Doan picked up his first win of the evening with a 55.20 clocking in the 100 Fly. Jytyla (a season’s best 1:00.46) and Yurttas (1:03.03) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Boyles swam to third in the 100 Free in 52.33.  Senior co-captain Albert Pan was fourth in 52.84, while Lou was fifth in 53.39.  In the 500 Free, Quackenbush clocked a 5:01.47 to claim second, with Vranyes (5:36.33) and Lessard (5:38.73) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.  The team score was now 64-61, in favor of the Mustangs.

The Mustangs recorded a 2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Mustangs’ quartet of Doan, Boyles, Albert Pan, and Quackenbush claimed second in 1:33.87.  The third place team of Yurttas, Goldman, Jytyla, and Vranyes clocked a 1:37.99.  At this point the Mustangs‘ lead had shrunk to one point at 70-69.  In the 100 Back, the Mustangs had a 1-2 finish with Isaac Pan touching the wall in 58.96 and Martini finishing in 1:01.02. Wilkowske’s 1:06.00 was good enough for fifth. The Mustangs had widened their lead to 81-74.

The locals crushed the Royals’ comeback hopes with a sweep of the 100 Breast to clinch the meet.  Doan touched first in 1:07.20, with Goldman (1:07.69) and Jytyla (1:11.62) right behind.  This made the score 94-77 in the Mustangs’ favor.  To close out the meet, the Mustangs finished 2-3 in the 400-yard Free Relay with a 3:29.30 clocking behind Albert Pan, Boyles, Isaac Pan, and Quackenbush. The quartet of Lou, Yurttas, Wilkowske, and Martini was third in 3:42.04.
