Mustangs Cruise to Pool Win Over Cretin-Derham Hall

Young Mustangs Push Dual Meet Record to 5-2

The Mounds View Mustangs swim & dive team hosted Cretin-Derham Hall at Chippewa Middle School on Thursday, February 2. The Mustangs won 10 of 12 events on the program on the way to a convincing  98-80 win over the Raiders in what was billed as a potentially close meet.  It turned out to be anything but, as the Mustangs had little trouble with the visitors. Three Mustangs recorded double wins in this meet.  Junior co-captain Quinn Doan won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke.  Freshman Isaac Pan continued his winning ways in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle. Fellow freshman Will Quackenbush also had a successful evening, winning both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. Sophomore Tad Tomczyk picked up his first win of the season with a nice performance in the diving event. Finally, the locals prevailed over the Raiders in all three relay events.

The Mustangs took an 8-6 lead after the opening 200-yard medley relay.  The Mustang quartet of Isaac Pan, sophomore Will Goldman, Doan, and junior Kyle Peterson finished in a dead heat with the Raiders’ top unit in 1:44.68.  The Mustang team of sophomore Jared Martini, junior Alex Li, sophomore Max Jytyla, and senior co-captain Noah Vranyes claimed third place in 1:51.78.  Quackenbush picked up his first win of the evening with a 1:50.44 clocking in the 200 Free.  Senior co-captain Albert Pan was second in 1:56.19, while junior Jason Lou was fifth in 2:00.22.  Isaac Pan touched out his CDH rival by a quarter of a second with a 2:03.70 clocking to win his first event of the evening in the 200 IM. Vranyes had a season’s best 2:14.80 to finish third, while Martini was right behind in fourth in 2:14.93.  In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Ian Boyles touched the wall in 23.23 to finish second.  Peterson (24.11) and Goldman (24.37) were third and fifth, respectively.  At this point in the meet, the Mustangs had the lead at 38-24.

Tomczyk turned in his season’s best performance in the diving well by tallying 158.80 points on the one-meter board. Sophomore Josh Bowman was third with 145.60 points to extend the Mustangs lead to 47-28.  Doan cruised to an easy win by over six seconds in the 100 Fly with a 54.47 swim. Jytyla was second in 1:01.60, while junior Atakan Yurttas was fourth in 1:03.96. Quackenbush won the 100 Free with a solid 50.49 clocking.  Boyles (52.34) and Peterson (54.51) were third and fourth, respectively. Isaac Pan picked up his second win of the evening with season’s best time of 5:14.70 in the 500 Free. Vranyes was fourth in 5:32.47 and Lou was fifth in 5:34.47. The team score was now 79-44 in favor of the Mustangs.

The Mustangs recorded a 1-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Mustangs’ quartet of Doan, Boyles, Peterson, and Quackenbush claimed first in 1:34.57.  The third place team of Goldman, Jytyla, Yurttas, and Lou clocked a 1:39.51.  In the 100-yard backstroke, Albert Pan finished second in 1:01.84.  Martini was third in 1:01.02, sophomore Coby Lessard was fourth in 1:03.84.  At this point, the Mustangs led 98-55 and had clinched the meet. Consequently, they chose to swim the final two events as “exhibition,” meaning points earned did not count towards the final score.

Doan posted a 1:06.51 in the 100 Breast for his second win of the evening. Goldman was second in 1:08.33, while Jytyla was fifth in 1:12.63.  To close out the meet, the Mustangs won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 3:30.69 clocking behind Isaac Pan, Boyles, Albert Pan, and Quackenbush. The quartet of Lou, junior Thomas Wilkowske, Vranyes, and Martini was third in 3:40.83.

In junior varsity competition, the Mustangs easily defeated the Raiders, 110-39. Individual event winners for the Mustangs were junior David Severson (200 Free & 500 Free), Li (200 IM & 100 Breast), junior Eric Pham (100 Fly), and Wilkowske (100 Free & 100 Back).

The Mustangs final dual meet of the season before heading into championship competition will be on Thursday, February 9 when they host the Woodbury Royals at Chippewa, beginning at 6:00 pm.  Diving competition will take place at Spring Lake Park HS at 4:30 pm.
