Mustangs Swim to Second at True Team Sections
Mustangs Qualify for True Team State Meet as Wild Card
The Mounds View Mustangs swam to a second place finish at the Section 4AA True Team section meet on Saturday, January 21 at Stillwater Junior High School. The host Stillwater Ponies won the six-team meet with 1,130 points, while the runner-up Mustangs tallied 1,013 points. The Mustangs’ performance was a strong one, with several season’s best times, and earned them an invitation to the True Team State meet as a wild card entry. The meet will be held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Saturday, January 28, beginning at 6:00 pm. Several Mustangs earned medals with a top eight finish, including senior co-captains Albert Pan and Noah Vranyes, junior co-captain Quinn Doan, juniors Jason Lou and Kyle Peterson, sophomores Josh Bowman, Ian Boyles, Will Goldman, Jared Martini and Tad Tomczyk, and freshmen Isaac Pan and Will Quackenbush. The locals also had multiple top eight finishes in all three relay events, including an exciting first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Mustangs claimed fourth place in the 200-yard medley relay with the quartet of Isaac Pan, Goldman, Doan and Martini touching the wall in 1:44.58. The second unit comprised of sophomore Coby Lessard, Lou, sophomore Max Jytyla and Peterson was seventh in 1:51.53. Quackenbush had a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:50.89 clocking, while Albert Pan was fifth in 1:55.57 and Vranyes eighth in 1:59.24. In the 200-yard individual medley, Isaac Pan swam to 2:03.28 to capture fourth place, while Lou was eighth in 2:15.42. In the 50-yard freestyle, Boyles swam a season’s best time of 23.13 to finish fourth, with Goldman (23.78) and Peterson (23.96) right behind in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
In the diving well, Tomczyk tallied 254.20 points in 11 dives off the one-meter board to nail down sixth place. Bowman scored 248.90 points to claim eighth. In the 100-yard butterfly, Doan swam to 54.51 to finish third. The locals finished 4-5 in the 100-yard freestyle, behind Boyles’ season best time of 51.75 and Martini’s season’s best 51.81. In the 500-yard freestyle, Quackenbush’s 5:03.81 was good enough for third, while Vranyes’ season’s best 5:24.63 earned him an eighth place finish.
The Mustangs had three teams in the top eight in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Boyles, Doan, Isaac Pan and Quackenbush swam a season’s best 1:31.36 to just touch out the Ponies’ “A” relay team by 22 one-hundredths of a second in one of the most exciting races of the afternoon. Peterson, Goldman, Lou and Vranyes combined to swim 1:36.45 to claim fourth place. The third unit comprised of senior Alan Wang, sophomore Max Jytyla, and juniors Eric Pham and Atakan Yurttas were eighth in 1:41.99.
Martini swam to 1:01.47 to finish sixth in the 100-yard backstroke, with Albert Pan claiming eighth in 1:01.78. Isaac Pan turned in one of the best individual performances of the day for the Mustangs, shaving 5 seconds off his previous best to finish third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.84. Doan (1:04.79) and Goldman (1:06.37) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Goldman’s time was a season’s best. In the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Mustangs had a pair of top eight finishes. The first unit comprised of Boyles, Albert Pan, Martini, and Quackenbush clocked 3:28.10 to capture third place. The quartet of Vranyes, Yurttas, Lessard, and junior Thomas Wilkowske claimed seventh in 3:48.15.
Other Mustangs competing in the meet, where everyone who finishes scores points, were juniors Derek Chen and David Severson, sophomores Jaymes Andrews and Nate Fatkhiyev, freshman Ryan Lawrence and eighth grader Sam Magnuson.
The next dual meet for the Mustangs will be with Forest Lake on Thursday, January 26 at Chippewa Middle School, beginning at 6:00 pm. Diving competition will take place at Spring Lake Park HS, beginning at 4:00 pm.
