Mustangs Defeat Park to Kick-off New Year
Mustangs Now 3-0 in Suburban East Conference
The Mounds View Mustangs swim & dive team hosted the Park (Cottage Grove) Wolfpack at Chippewa Middle School on Thursday, January 5. The Mustangs won 9 of 12 events on the evening program and cruised to a 100-78 win to run their Suburban East Conference (SEC) dual meet record to 3-0. Freshman Will Quackenbush was a double winner for the locals, finishing first in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. Other Mustangs notching wins were sophomore Ian Boyles, (50-yard freestyle), junior co-captain Quinn Doan (100-yard butterfly), sophomore Jared Martini (100-yard freestyle), and sophomore Coby Lessard (100-yard backstroke). The locals also won all three relay events.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 10-4 lead with a 1-3 finish in the opening 200-yard medley relay. The Mustang quartet of freshmen Isaac Pan, sophomore Will Goldman, Doan, and Boyles touched the wall first in 1:45.12. The third place unit was comprised of senior co-captain Noah Vranyes, junior Jason Lou, Lessard, and junior Thomas Wilkowske, who finished in 1:55.27. Quackenbush won the 200 Free by over five seconds in 1:50.68. Senior co-captain Albert Pan was second in 1:55.71. The Mustangs had a 2-3-4 finish in the 200-yard individual medley. Isaac Pan was second in 2:03.68, with Lou and Vranyes claiming third and fourth in 2:15.39 and 2:17.00, respectively. Boyles had a nice 23.70 clocking in the 50 Free to claim first. Martini (24.13) and Goldman (24.62) were third and fifth, respectively. At the diving break, the Mustangs had the lead at 39-23.
Sophomore Josh Bowman tallied 155.85 points in the one-meter board to finish second in the diving competition, just 1.15 points behind the winning Wolfpack diver. The Mustangs swept the 100 Fly with Doan touching out teammate Isaac Pan to claim first. Doan’s time was 55.02, while Pan touched the wall in 55.63. Lou was third in 1:02.31. Martini and Albert Pan battled hard in the 100 Free with Martini coming out on top in 52.79. Pan finished in 52.98, with Boyles taking third in 53.71 to complete the sweep. The Mustangs now had a commanding lead at 69-38.
Quackenbush (5:07.23) won the 500 Free by over sixteen seconds to win his second event of the evening. Sophomore Max Jytyla was third in 5:52.14, while sophomore Nate Fatkhiyev was fifth in 6:00.37. The Mustangs easily won the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet Martini, Doan, Isaac Pan, and Quackenbush claimed first in 1:35.11. The second unit comprised of Albert Pan, Goldman, Jytyla, and sophomore Atakan Yurttas took third place in 1:40.30. The Mustangs clinched the meet with a 1-2-5 finish in the 100 Back with Lessard winning in 1:04.07. Vranyes was right behind in second in 1:04.28. Eighth grader Sam Magnuson was fifth in 1:07.44. At this point, the Mustangs led the meet 100-53 and decided to swim the final two events on the program as “exhibition,” meaning that points earned did not count toward the final score.
Doan finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a swim of 1:05.09. Goldman was third in 1:08.21. To close out the meet, the locals finished 1-3 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The unit comprised of Martini, Boyles, Albert Pan, and Quackenbush claimed first in 3:31.21. The quartet of Lou, Jytyla, Wilkowske, and Vranyes finished third in 3:45.25.
In junior varsity competition, the Mustangs won easily 115-52. Individual event winners for the Mustangs were Yurttas (200 Free & 100 Fly), Magnuson (200 IM), senior Alan Wang (50 Free & 100 Breast), Wilkowske (100 Free & 100 Back), and seventh grader Matthew Shen (500 Free). The JVs also won all three relay events.
The Mustangs will host the perennial league favorite Stillwater Ponies at Chippewa on Tuesday, January 10 at 6:00 pm. Diving will take place at 4:30 at Spring Lake Park HS. Two days later, the Mustangs will travel to Woodbury to take on the East Ridge Raptors at Woodbury Middle School, beginning at 6:00 pm. Diving competition will take place at Lake Middle School at 4:30 pm.
