Mustangs’ Season Ends at State Prelims
Season’s Best Times Not Quite Fast Enough to Advance
The Mounds View Mustangs swim team participated in the preliminary round of the Minnesota State High School League 2017 swim & dive championships at the University of Minnesota Jean Freeman Aquatic Center on Friday, March 3. Despite season’s best performance by the Mustangs’ two entries, they did not finish in the “Top 16” to qualify for the finals on Saturday, March 4. Freshman Will Quackenbush had a strong swim to claim twentieth place in the 500-yard freestyle with a season’s best time of 4:50.19. He currently holds down fifth place on the all-time Mustangs honor roll in that event. He also swam the anchor leg on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that claimed eighteenth place with a season’s best swim of 1:29.87. The other members of that quartet were junior co-captain Quinn Doan, freshman Isaac Pan, and sophomore Ian Boyles. Despite not advancing to finals, the Mustangs State meet participants, who are all underclassmen, gained valuable experience in championship competition that will undoubtedly pay off next season.
Mustangs Finish Second at 4AA Sections
Quackenbush, 200 Free Relay Team Qualify for State Meet
The Mounds View Mustangs swam and dived to a second place finish at the Section 4AA championship meet finals on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25 at Stillwater Junior High. The Mustangs scored 395.5 points to claim the runner-up trophy for the second straight year. Stillwater easily won the championship with a score of 580.5 points. The Mustangs were led by freshman Will Quackenbush who finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and qualified for the State meet at the University of Minnesota’s Jean Freeman Aquatic Center on March 2-4. The Mustangs 200-yard freestyle relay team finished second to earn a trip to the State meet, as well. Several Mustangs posted season’s best times in their respective events over the course of the three-day meet to cap off their season. (read more)
Mustangs Swim to Second at JV Conference
Young Mustangs Gain Valuable Experience
The Mounds View Mustangs participated in the Suburban East Conference (SEC) Junior Varsity (JV) meet on Saturday, February 18 in Stillwater. The Mustangs’ squad of thirteen swimmers finished second in the top flight that consisted of the first through fourth place teams in the SEC dual meet standings. The Mustangs finished the SEC season in third place with a 6-2 record. (read more)
Mustangs Down Woodbury in Dual Meet Finale
Mustangs Finish 6-2 in Suburban East Conference
The Mounds View Mustangs swim & dive team hosted Woodbury at Chippewa Middle School on Thursday, February 9 in their final dual meet of the season. The Mustangs won 6 of 12 events on the program, but showed the depth necessary to outduel the visiting Royals on the way to a 100-85 victory. The locals were led by junior co-captain Quinn Doan who won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman Isaac Pan also recorded a pair of wins in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke. Freshman Will Quackenbush picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle. The Mustangs 200-yard medley relay team was also victorious. (read more)
Mustangs Cruise to Pool Win Over Cretin-Derham Hall
Young Mustangs Push Dual Meet Record to 5-2
The Mounds View Mustangs swim & dive team hosted Cretin-Derham Hall at Chippewa Middle School on Thursday, February 2. The Mustangs won 10 of 12 events on the program on the way to a convincing 98-80 win over the Raiders in what was billed as a potentially close meet. It turned out to be anything but, as the Mustangs had little trouble with the visitors. Three Mustangs recorded double wins in this meet. Junior co-captain Quinn Doan won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman Isaac Pan continued his winning ways in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle. Fellow freshman Will Quackenbush also had a successful evening, winning both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. Sophomore Tad Tomczyk picked up his first win of the season with a nice performance in the diving event. Finally, the locals prevailed over the Raiders in all three relay events. (read more)
Mustangs Swim to Ninth at True Team State
Several Swimmers Record Season’s Best Performances
The Mounds View Mustangs made their first appearance at the True Team State swim and dive meet in five years on Saturday, January 28 at the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota. The young Mustangs made the most of their opportunity and, paced by a number of season’s best performances by several athletes, finished ninth among the field of twelve top Class AA teams from across the state. The Mustangs were led by junior co-captain Quinn Doan, and freshmen Issac Pan and Will Quackenbush, all three of whom had a pair of “top 16” finishes.
